Emir: Second South Summit ended with strategic vision
His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir of Qatar has underlined in his concluding address to the G77 + China Second South Summit, that it was able through constructive dialogue to arrive at an appropriate strategic vision concerning a number of economic and development matters expected to be taken up at the high level meeting of the UN General Assembly next September. H.H the Emir also pointed out that the developing countries should follow a course that strengthens their ability to negotiate and participate actively in a better world economic order, especially that the vital interests of the group members and its position in the international relations face challenges and risks that 'oblige us further increase their cooperation. He underlined the importance of the role of development in maintaining peace and security, saying that as long as poverty threatens increasing numbers of people in different parts of the world, collective security can not be achieved. Therefore, combating poverty must remain on top of the priorities of the developing countries which need serious global support to allow them to fulfill the necessary social health and educational programmes, H.H the Emir asserted. H.H the Emir went on to say that this requires better international response to the needs of economies and greater UN participation in the development issues and a democratic approach in the decision making in the international institutions that must take into consideration the circumstances and needs of the developing countries. In this respect, H.H the Emir called upon the developed countries to fulfill the pledges they made at the United Nations conferences to realize the expectations of the developing countries regarding official aid for development, debts, trade, commodities, science, technology, education and other fields, stressing in this regard the necessity to review the pledges already fulfilled and to set a schedule to implement those that remain to be fulfilled. H.H the Emir expressed the hope that Doha declaration and Doha programme of action that are based on the Havana programme of action and Marrakech declaration on south -south cooperation will contribute to push forward this cooperation through the implementation of the ledges made in them as well as Qatar's readiness to prepare and participate in implementing what have been agreed upon at the second south summit. The second south summit of the G77 and China concluded after vital and fruitful discussions and deliberations which covered all the challenges that are facing the south and the important issues of developments and security, millennium declaration, human rights, inter- trade, economic affairs, south - north cooperation as well as economic partnership topics between the two sides. A host of head of states, governments and delegations from the 132 member states of the G 77 + China attended the two days summit and endorsed the Doha work plan and commended H.H the Emir's inititative to establish the development fund and the 20 million dollars that was offered by the State of Qatar to this fund.
