For free trade agreement between the EU and the Gulf Cooperation Council. Rodi Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou MEP
2010-05-31
Rodi Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou MEP, Vice-President of the European Parliament, will participate at the international conference 'Doha Forum on democracy, development and free trade' which will take place in Qatar's capital city, Doha from 31 May to 3 June.

The Doha Forum is an annual international conference which has taken place under the auspices of HE The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, since 2003. The key themes of this year's conference are: investments in the post-economic crisis era, international trade, migration, development, education, research and international safety. Officials, such as the President of the General Assembly of the UN Dr Ali Abdusalam Al-Treiki, the Prime Minister of Canada, and the Prime Minister of Hungary, will honour the forum with their presence. Furthermore, included in the programme are interventions by prominent political figures, representatives of the business and education community of Qatar, of the United States, of Asian and Latin-American countries as well as of European countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany, and France. The list of participants also includes significant representatives of major international governmental and non-governmental organisations as well as of the international press, the Arabic channel Al Jazeera and the US newspaper the Washington Post.

Rodi Kratsa's intervention will focus on the possibilities of cooperation between the EU and the Gulf countries on issues of development, security and peace in the Mediterranean region. The European Parliament has been consistently developing bilateral relations with the Gulf countries in the framework of inter-parliamentary committees and official visits. On the occasion of her visit to Doha, Rodi Kratsa will meet with the Prime Minister of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, as well as with other Ministers, not only from Qatar but also from other Gulf countries in order to promote cooperation aimed at the completion of the free trade agreement between the EU and the Gulf Cooperation Council "whose delay constitutes an obstacle to the closer economic and political cooperation between the two sides", stated Mrs Kratsa.
