Humberside's first Muslim mayor will be installed tomorrow in Scunthorpe. Jawaid Ishaq, 62, who has been appointed Mayor of North Lincolnshire, said : "I come from a tiny village in Kashmir and I'm proud to have come this far in British politics. I hope the younger ethnic generation in the region will take a leaf out of my book and play an active part in doing their best for the community." In 2002, Mr Ishaq organised the Queen’s first visit to a British mosque. She visited the Islamic Centre in Scunthorpe.

The mother of Jimmy Mizen, the London teenager murdered on Saturday, said the family’s Catholic faith is helping them survive. Margaret Mizen said: “It is our faith that keeps us going, we would never cope otherwise. Lots of people have given us cards and flowers. God is with us and in our family.”
