More than 170 scholars representing Islam, Christianity and Judaism will discuss issues related to “human solidarity” during the seventh Conference on Interfaith Dialogue beginning in Doha on October 20, officials said yesterday.
The two-day conference is being organised by the Doha International Centre for Interfaith Dialogue (DICID). Speakers from all the five continents are expected to participate.
DICID chairman Prof Ibrahim al-Naimi told reporters that scholars from the world’s three major religions would discuss their “common responsibilities” to confront religiously-motivated wars and natural disasters.
The official said that common spiritual values would be one of the subjects being discussed. Al-Naimi said the delegates would also take up, from a religious point of view, the reasons for the economic recession and ways to solve them.
The conference will also discuss Jerusalem and ways to “defend” the holy places there.
Aisha al-Mannai, the dean of the Shariah Department at Qatar University, said that Israeli aggression against Gaza earlier this year would be one of the topics.
She said the conference this year should be held with the “mentality of accepting others (their religions) and a desire to know more about them.”
