DOHA: The World Bank (WB) is keen to work with faith networks and organisations in the developing countries to fight poverty and diseases, a senior WB official said yesterday.

“Faith networks and organizations play an important role in the development process. Besides providing assistance to people in need, they affect the perceptions and behaviour of individuals, households and organisations,” said Quentin T Woodon, advisor and program manager, Development Dialogue on Values and Ethics (DDVE) at World Bank.

Wooden was a speaker at a session on “solidarity and economic interdependence” at the Seventh Doha Conference on Interfaith Dialogue which concluded here yesterday.

The DDVE, established about 10 years ago is a small unit in charge of overseeing the bank’s work on ethics, faith and development.

“The basic objective of World Bank is to alleviate poverty. We have carried out projects in several developing countries with the support of faith organizations and networks. In the Middle East and South Asia, Zakat is playing a major role in social protection. We are keen to study this issue,” Woodon told The Peninsula later.
