The 7th Interfaith Conference ended in Doha yesterday with a call for building greater human solidarity to fight the conflicts and injustices which divided the followers of the world’s major religions.
Participants deplored rising poverty, hunger and diseases across the world, saying that religious leaders should work more closely to tackle these challenges.
The two-day conference discussed crucial issues such as raging wars, violence and injustice.
More than 250 delegates, representing Islam, Judaism and Christianity, from 59 countries took part in the annual meeting.
They believed that it was often the weak and the innocent who were the first victims and that “only through co-operation, mutual understanding and respect, true human solidarity could be achieved.”
In a communiqué issued at the end of the conference, the organisers said: “Whether disasters are natural or man-made, there remains a major responsibility on humankind to deploy resources with greater equity and more ecological sustainability.
“Human beings need each other to overcome obstacles to peace and justice, and should draw on the guidance of the common wisdom of their particular but often converging religious traditions.”
The delegates said that they were convinced that human solidarity in the widest sense could only be built through patient dialogue, common action and well-planned programmes to help needy people through respect for the rights of other religion’s followers.
There was a specific concern for the need to protect places of worship and holy sites, particularly in a place very central to all three religions like Jerusalem.
The participants said: “We are committing ourselves to overcome the conflicts and injustice which still too often separate us and to work at international, regional and local levels to build human solidarity.”
