'Law and Women' / Bigger legal role sought for Arab women

Women in the Arab world should have a larger presence in the legal circles, Qatar University’s Faculty of Law dean Hassan Abdurrahman al-Sayed said yesterday.
Speaking on ‘Law and Women’ at the Qatar Law Forum, in honour of the Arab Women’s Legal Network (AWLN), al-Sayed pointed out to the important roles played by Arab women and their significance in the legal circles.
Justice Ihsaan Barakat, First Instance Court chief, said that the AWLN was a forum to empower Arab women and place them in major positions.
She noted that in the traditional Arab societies women were marginalised due to the social heritage and old conceptions.
She maintained that the challenges faced by Arab women were possible to beat through the civil society organisations in terms of activating their role in the legal profession.
The justice stressed the need for amendments to some of the existing laws in order accommodate more women in legal circles an.
The acting secretary general of Gulf Organisation for Industrial Consulting, Lulwa al-Misnad, said that the women should choose to work in the legal circle.
She observed that more women in the Qatari legal circle were engaged into research activities than the practice of law.
The legal participants from Qatar noted that women in Qatar lacked the necessary awareness regarding choosing to work in the legal circle.
